The Girls (un)Valentine’s Day Party is a fun day of self esteem building workshops for young women. This Valentine’s Day, girls ages 11-15 are invited to participate in a number of workshops including skateboarding, t shirt surgery and self defence. The event, held in partnership with the Girls Action Foundation, was organized by a group of dynamic Calgarian women with the intent of providing teenage girls positive role models and self image. Forget romance, let’s go skateboarding!

By Car

Turn north off of Crowchild Trail on 53 St NW. Turn left at Dalhousie Drive and again at Dalhousie Road.

By Transit

Take the 10 bus to 53 Street NW and Dalhousie Drive. Walk west on Dalhousie Drive. Turn left at Dalhousie Road and walk until the end of the road. All in all, it should be a 10 minute walk.

Workshops

Throughout the day, you will have the opportunity to participate in two out of these four workshops.

Skateboarding
Learn the basics of the sport! This workshop will focus on becoming comfortable on a skateboard and practicing introductory techniques. More experienced riders are welcome to participate as well as beginners. All participants in this workshop are asked to bring closed toed shoes, a helmet and knee/elbow pads if available and must sign our waiver.

Art
In this two part workshop, you will get to participate in both a t shirt surgery workshop and in the making of a collaborative art piece! T shirt surgery is the art of revamping a shirt to be more unique and true to your style. Bring one of your own or use one provided to practice a variety of techniques such as sewing, painting and applying graphics to make your shirt look brand new!
The workshop will also include the creation of a collaborative art piece, to be displayed at The New Gallery. Participants in this workshop are asked to bring clothing they are comfortable with getting paint on.

Self Defense
Learn how to protect yourself! In this hands on workshop, we will learn simple and effective techniques for staying safe. All participants in this workshop must bring comfortable clothing and must have a parent/guardian sign our waiver.


Music
Ever wanted to know how to play a guitar? In this two part workshop, you will participate in a drum circle and learn basic chords. All skill levels welcome!

Some reminders for the big day!

Pack a bag lunch for the day (please avoid products containing peanuts).

A snack will be provided.If attending the self defence or skateboarding workshops a parent/guardian will be required to sign a waiver. This can be signed at the door or can be printed online (found on the main page) and brought the day of.

Please bring clothing that is comfortable and appropriate for all workshops.

If you plan on attending the skateboard workshop, please wear appropriate footwear and bring a helmet and knee/elbow pads if possible.
